What are the single-band and dual-band routers?

A frequency band is how wireless data is transferred between devices. Most of the current WiFi routers transmit only one of these frequencies which are 2.4 bands since it’s the most common frequency and they’re known as single-band routers. But both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands can be broadcasted by a lot of newer WiFi routers known as dual-band WiFi routers.

The 5GHz router introduced by Subisu supports dual band i.e. it can operate in both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies making it easy for Wi-Fi users to connect and switch networks as per their requirement.

Why should you upgrade to the 5GHz plus dual-band router?

Right now, you’re probably using a single band router i.e. router that uses a 2.4GHz frequency band. It’s the most common and standard band used in WiFi routers. Many other devices such as microwaves still use the 2.4GHz frequency band.

When multiple devices use the same frequency band (i.e. 2.4GHz) it results in overlapping channels (signal congestion) in the network. This causes a lot of interference with WiFi signals as a result WiFi network speed slows down or your device frequently loses connection to the router.

Which frequency band should you use?

The difference in using 2.4GHz and 5GHz comes down to two factors: speed (bandwidth) and range.

Use 5GHz frequency band:

If your goal is higher speed with less interference.

If your device is located near router and doesn't need to be moved much.

If you are doing high bandwidth activities online such as video calling, streaming, gaming, or downloading.

Use 2.4GHz frequency band:

If your goal is larger range i.e. your device needs to be moved around a lot like your smartphone.

If you are not using high bandwidth intensive activities online.

Things to consider while buying/using 5GHz dual band router

First, check whether your devices such as smartphones and laptops support 5GHz WiFi.

If the network adapter supports network mode 802.11ac, the deviceis compatible to both 2.4 GHz and 5GHz WiFi. And, if the network adapter supports network mode 802.11n, the devices may not be compatible to both 2.4 GHz and 5GHz network.
